In a glimpse, this collapsed building looks like a normal abandoned house. With cracks, mosses and grass crawling all over the wall.

However, this abandoned house is not as what you think. It is one of the houses that affected by one of the roughshod tragedies that happened in Malaysia 15 years ago (26 Dec 2004); a big wave called Tsunami that struck northern coastal and some on west coastal area.

During my motorcycle trip to Penang last December 2019, we managed to drag our trip further up to this place, Pantai Kuala Muda; one of the areas that was affected by the Tsunami. Not to waste this opportunity, I’ve taken a chance to visit the Tsunami Gallery that showed some pieces of memories of this forlorn tragedy.

According to an uncle that takes care of the gallery, the height of the wave is believed to be as high as a coconut tree, around 10 to 15 feet. During the tragedy, most of the villagers were attending a wedding nearby their village and their houses were not occupied.

At least, 12 deaths reported in the village itself during the tragedy. Whilst Penang Island recorded the highest number of death with 52, 2 in Perak, and 1 in Selangor.

To commemorate the tragedy, a monument which is a stack of 26 boats that were put on top of the other was built by the villagers. 26 boats were used as to reflect the date; 26 December where the tragedy took place. All of the boats were the original boats that were stranded and shattered after the tragedy.

May all of the victims’ soul rest in peace.
